Where is
Winston Smith? Wanted
La
vida de los otros (das leben der anderen)
|
Conceptually,
Where is Winston Smith?
Wanted represents a personal reflection of the artist about the
similarities between today´s society and the inhabiting world of
“1984”, the dystopian political fiction novel by George Orwell,
published in 1949. The exhibition showcases the artist’s new series of
work, centred in the search of the novel's character, Winston Smith. By
creating an associative parallel with the viewer, anyone can become
Winston Smith. The works, black and white photographs and slides,
present both close individuals to the artist and unknown people, witch
being manipulated result as collages, painting and drawings, so
recognizable in Olondrix’s work.
The term dystopian fiction refers to specific literary genre in which
societies are developed under totalitarian states who claim to be
apparently seeking the happiness of its citizens. The novel “1984”
presents a humanity governed under totalitarianism where everything is
regulated; even thoughts can be considered crimes. The future, the past
and the present are controlled and manipulated. The “Big Brother” sees
it all and everyone.
In the twenty-first century it seems to be that this political fiction
becomes tangibles. Citizens of many countries are exposed to the
control of so-called “powers”. Surveillance is imposed as protection
and not as a form of control; the usual dichotomy protection or
surveillance?
We can be monitored, even due to different thinking, as happened in
“1984”. But now new technologies also come into play new. Google,
Google maps, GPS, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter or “security cameras”
located all over, favour this control giving information of our
habitual acts, which belong to our privacy.
